For immediate release
To: Conference Commissioners and Tournament Officials
From: The American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators
Date: March 6, 2006
The NCAA, NAIA and other basketball tournaments require that cheerleading
teams conform to the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and
Administrators Cheerleading Safety Guidelines.
The AACCA is recognized as the standard of care for cheerleading safety. In
addition to safety certification courses, the AACCA has a committee for high
school and for college cheerleading safety rules. These committees review all
safety rules following the basketball season and make necessary changes for the
following school year, effective June 1 of that year. In addition to the overall
rules review process, there is a specific recommendation before the rules
committees to study and review the performance of basket tosses and pyramids in
basketball venues.
In light of recent events, the Executive Committee of the AACCA has decided
to make a recommendation that will be in effect immediately and extend through
the remainder of basketball season, including tournament play. The full rules
committees will take up this issue during their regular meetings to determine
the appropriate action for the 2006-2007 school year.
The Executive Committee is issuing a recommendation to all conference
commissioners and tournament managers to immediately prohibit basket tosses and
2 ½ high pyramids for the remainder of the basketball season, including
tournament play.
Again, this recommendation is to go into effect immediately. This
recommendation is to be distributed to all cheerleading coaches, tournament
officials, managers and conference commissioners. A coach’s notice is attached
to this email and can also be downloaded at http://www.aacca.org for printing
and distribution at to cheerleading coaches or teams.
